If I remember correctly a lot of these men had been accused of cowardice, and sentenced to death........but of course nowadays, we recognise that the majority of them were probably suffering from shell-shock...........known now as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
I believe the majority were given a posthumous pardon as well as this memorial.
They were given a pardon in 2006 some of them were underage having lied to get into the army there are 309 posts with a name and details on each one some were still teenagers when they were executed. If you don't know where it is The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire if you venture up north some time it's worth a visit there are over 400 memorials now. As a boy I remember seeing old soldiers with shell shock constantly shaking and twitching. If you go onto the web site you can find a complete list of memorials you may find one that is important to you
