Frog Heaven

Its Springtime in Derbyshire, England and that means its time to expand the family. Here in this small pond, the water bubbles with perhaps a hundred frogs or more. They are our 'Common Frogs' (Rana temporaria) our most well-known amphibian.

"The common frog might be widespread in the UK, but populations have declined in recent years. The main threat to frogs is the loss of breeding habitats as small ponds are filled in and urban development cuts off routes to bodies of water."

Herb Riddle replied to David G Johnson:

A wonderful sight David. Taken just at the bottom closed off start of the road after the parking. How many tadpoles will survive is anybody's guess. Glad you liked it.

Best Wishes. Herb

Herb Riddle replied to Stephan Fey:

These don't make much noise but I could hear a gentle hum like noise of their croaks.

Wonderful and well captured. When I tried to capture a scene like this peeping round a wall they went silent and dived away in seconds. I did stay quiet but my outline must have been very visible.

Herb Riddle replied to Colin Ashcroft:

That is what I usually get too. I have no idea why there were so many frogs here. The pond was not so very big and a lot of people passing on this popular route.

Cheers. Herb

It's still early to hear their night song. They're still hibernating here. A very curious sight. I've never seen such a large gathering. Although I can hear them croaking by the thousands. Have a safe and healthy weekend my friend.

Herb Riddle replied to Anton Cruz Carro:

I have seen a few places in France where there were lots of frogs and once too in a old swimming pool in Cyprus where they made a lot of noise but these made very little noise. I have never seen so many this close before in Britain.

Keep safe and enjoy the rest of the weekend. Herb

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

A rather new experience for us too Toz. As said to Anton above, I have seen and heard many frogs together in France and Cyprus but not in Britain. Maybe is the weather?

Cheers. Herb
